Laser Teeth Whitening Results

The process of teeth whitening is primarily of cosmetic value but the fact remains that white teeth and healthy teeth are complementary to each other. Teeth tend to discolor with age. If your teeth are white without bleaching, then it proves that you follow good oral hygiene and take good care of your teeth. While a dentist will readily offer to bleach your teeth, you can do that at home also. There are many products for whitening your teeth but choosing the best among may not be an easy job.

At home whitening is generally done with bleaching gels containing high concentration or low concentration peroxide. Teeth bleaching by peroxide solutions primarily depend upon the concentration and the amount of time the solution is in contact with the teeth. Laser whitening uses a laser to accelerate the whitening process of high concentration peroxide solutions. Some home whitening kits attempt to produce similar results with low concentration solutions for a longer period of time.

Best whitening is provided by using a home whitening kit for the recommended period, which is generally 5-10 minutes. Then brush your teeth twice daily, once before breakfast and then after dinner. Make sure that you clean the front, underside and the back. Also clean your tongue, especially the back, with a couple of gentle strokes of toothbrush. Use a dental floss and clean the spaces between teeth. That completes your daily regimen for getting the desired long term results from home whitening kits.

A whitening gel gives the best results when used daily. This is because most home whitening kits comprise of low concentration gels that are effective only when they remain in contact with your teeth for longer periods. Daily use also encourages development of an even level of whiteness. A full course of whitening can dramatically improve the cosmetic appearance of your teeth and give you that sparkling smile. Some stains such as tetracycline stains are difficult to remove and require prolonged exposure to bleaching gels.

Whitening toothpaste is not basically a bleaching product as they do not contain any bleaching agent. Whatever bleaching agent that some may contain has little impact because it is simply not enough to be effective. However, some do contain abrasives like silica, aluminum oxide, calcium carbonate or calcium phosphate. These are effective only for removing stains caused by colored molecules of food that gets stuck between teeth. Bleaching solutions on the other hand alter the intrinsic color of teeth. Home whitening kits normally use carbamide peroxide of varying concentration ranging between 10% and 22%. The concentration is typically non toxic and can be applied directly to the teeth, either embedded in a strip or held in place by a mouth guard.

Side effects of teeth bleaching with high concentration solutions include chemical burns if the solution comes in contact with unprotected tissues. Since home whitening kits use a low concentration solution they are generally safe. Even long term exposure produces a very insignificant reduction in tooth enamel. Home whitening kits provide effective and safe bleaching. However, once achieved, teeth whitening has still to be maintained by regular brushing and good oral hygiene.
